A Mac Mini Core Duo at 2.16GHz

By jwa. Original by Lionel - 05/03/2006 19:41:29 CET - Category: Mac Intel
We knew it wouldn't be long before someone tried switching the processor in their Mac mini for a more powerful one.
It has been posted on the Xtremesystems forums (thanks Antipod).
Fugger, one of it's members, has exchanged the 1.5GHz Core Solo from his machine for a 2.16GHz Core Duo.

From a economic point of view, there won't be much interest in installing a 2.16GHz processor, currently, knowing that it costs 700 Euros.
But Intel does have a practice of regularly lowering the prices of its processors. The first price drop on the Core Duo should happen in May. For now, the best value is replacing a Core Solo for a 1.66 or 1.86 GHz Core Duo.
No information on the temperature or amount of noise was provided. It would be interesting to have that information since the Mac mini must be quiet. However, a Core Duo T2xxx dissipates between 25 and 49 watts; so there is a very broad range possible.
For those that love silence, but wishing to increase the power of their machine, it will probably be necessary to move to the Core Duo L2xxx. But these are more expensive and less quick.
