- VLC: Version 0.86 Available - Lionel - 13:52:11

VLC, one of the "must have" cross-platform media player, is now available in a new version (v0.86). In addition to fix some bugs, it also brings new features:

Building on feedback from the 29 million downloads of VLC media player 0.8.5, we bring you version 0.8.6 with many bug fixes, as well as a couple of new features we think you will truly enjoy. Most prominent are probably Windows Media Video 9 and Flash Video. Other important changes are improved H.264 decoding, better Windows Unicode support, a Fullscreen controller and Apple Remote support for Mac OS X.

- Pioneer: New Burner Models for Q1 2007 - Lionel - 11:36:49

Pioneer unveiled specifications of new products that should be available for Q1 2007:

- In February, the DVR-112, supporting 18x DVD burning speed will be available. This is probably to follow the same strategy than most burner manufacturers: while waiting for the winner of the blue laser-based DVD war, push current DVD format to its physical limits. The first model will be available as PATA format, then one month later a SATA format will be released. Both versions will also be available as LightScribe-compatible, while Pioneer was originally supporting the competitor format, Labelflash.
- Probably in February too, the second BD burner generation will be released: the BDR-202. Based on a SATA format, it will burn BD-R at 4x while supporting burning capabilities for DVD and CD media.

Pioneer seems to follow competitors than really bringing innovative products as it used to be in the past.

- Real Counterfeit iPod nano: Part II - Lionel - 11:27:34

Harry, very active in tracking down all real counterfeit iPod nanos, has sent us photos of a "new model".

The design of the click-wheel does not seem to be as good as the previous one we reported about (here, the backside still features the Apple's logo. The same logo appears when booting the counterfeit iPod nano. The user interface, while looking very similar to a mobile phone UI, is rather user-friendly.

For your information, Harry is in contact with Apple's representatives in charge of Apple's trademarks and copyright protection.
