Free supports copper against optical fiber

By Greg. Original by Lionel - 27/11/2005 20:00:09 CET - Category: Internet
We recently spoke of the implementation of optical fiber networks in Paris. In some areas, Cité Fibre can provide connections with date transfer rates up to 100 Mbits/sec (amongst which 30 for Internet). At the same time,Noos, another provider, is conducting tests with rates close to 40 Mbits/sec. The Internet provider Free, which has always proposed first class accesses, had to react in order to comfort its investors about the futur of copper connection. It just did so and has announced working on F-DSL, a technology which allows a 178 Mbits/sec downloading speed (18 for uploading).
This already existing technology is indeed called ADSL-bonding. Its principle is to use multiple copper connexions in order to have a broader bandwith. Apart from the installation of extra-lines and a dedicated modem, it requires no change of infrastructure and therefore no major investment. Of course, Free is ready to release this technology on the market when competition will require such banwiths.

Did really Apple authorise that?

The website PopMac provides to those who do not have access to a broadband connection a DVD with freewares, sharewares, videos, fonts and even OSX updates.
This last point surprised us a lot as it is known that Apple does not agree to give them out, even on the CDs accompanying magazines.
Indeed, Apple is more respectful to Mac magazines now but we would be very surprised if Apple authorised someone to make business with their software updates; and the DVD is not cheap, it costs $49!!

Recruitement for Rome Apple Store

By Greg. Original by Lionel - 27/11/2005 10:37:51 CET - Category: Apple
Thanks to Simon for the tip.
Rumours had it that mainland Europe's first Apple Store was about to open its doors, unfortunately not in France but in Italy. It is now official since Apple has published adds for new positions in Rome.

ATI seeking the light

By Greg. Original by Lionel - 27/11/2005 00:48:20 CET - Category: Video
By now everybody must have learnt about ATI's distressfull situation. Chronic delays behind NVidia - be it for crossfire technology or for the new generations of GPU - have been seriously backfiring on the Canadian graphic card maker.
Take the Radeon X1800XT, flagship of the company: this card was announced months ago but it is only beginning to be delivered now in ridiculously small quantities. But the most irritating factor for prospecting clients is certainly the fact that ATI has been consistently changing its specifications in order to match the latest Geforce 7800 GTX's. While the VPU X1800XT's base frequency was first announced as 625MHz, it has since skipped to 650MHz and will probably reach 700MHz in another version. Then again you never know: these products are not even on the market... And on top of that, as if to push the customers away for good, a steady rumour wants it that new high-end VPUs are to come out during the first quarter next year (Source: Digitimes).
This stubborn uncertainty might well be ATI's heaviest burden.
