Plextor, currently selling optical drives under its name, isn't really the maker of the same. After changing suppliers from NEC, then Sanyo, and then Matsushita, Plextor is going to use BenQ components in its upcoming PX-740A.
Obviously, Plextor is trying to lower its production costs, to stay in the now crazy race of optical storage drives. Now that all burners are operating at 8x, DL, the prices are running to the ground since no technological advantage can justify a higher price tag.
