Mac mini: the missing connector

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 10/03/2005 10:54:23 CET - Category: Peripheral
Leo Bodnar who is now a Mac mini specialist has noticed a missing/unused connector on a vertical CD/HDD interconnect board.

If it is not really clear what could be done with this connector, it contains all the components to create an internal FireWire port.
It is not the first time that Apple is adding unused components or connectors in a computer, it was already the case for iMac and PBG4 Ti. In the future we might see the evolution of this unused connector...maybe not...

Replacing motherboard for iMacG5: it is getting difficult...

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 10/03/2005 10:30:07 CET - Category: G5
Yesterday, we were reporting a 2 to 3 weeks delay for having a iMacG5 motherboard replaced under AppleCare conditions.
Myriam has obtained information regarding the reason behind such a delay!
Following the well known, reported and described problem affecting the graphic card of her iMacG5 (November 2004 production serie), she has received a motherboard from AppleCare on the basis of the "Do It yourself" program. After one and a half hour of work, she realized that the new motherboard was simply defect too!! Annoyed, and after bringing her iMacG5 to an AppleCenter, she has learned that it was the 96th cases of defective iMacG5 replacement motherboard that Apple has sent to Europe!!
This is probably the reason why currently it is impossible to obtain a new motherboard. All stocks have been sent back and all AppleCenters are waiting for new ones to be delivered.

CherryOS available... a new skin/mod for PearPC?

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 10/03/2005 10:19:02 CET - Category: PC
After many delays, CherryOS, a G4 Emulator allowing you to install Panther on Wintel-based computers, is available. Apple's award-winning operating system, onto your PC. A CherryOS trial version is available for download (it will work for 14 days).
The website Betanews.com has tester the software and has confirmed what most users and developers were already claiming, despite denies from CherryOS creator.
This software is simply a copy of PearPC with a modified interface.
Although PearPC source code is freely available, its usage is controlled by the GNU General Public License (GPL), which states that the code and any modifications must be offered by anyone that distributes it; even if you then sell it for 50$!!
If you want to try it:

Arthur would like to introduce his newest creation :
It's a contextual menu item that'll make it a snap to view all images in a folder, as a slide show, without the help of any other program. JPEG, GIF, TIFF, BMP, PNG, PSD, AI and EPS are supported, and you even get access to handy controls such as zoom, rotate, and view image info. It is a shareware (as in "cheap"). The unregistred version is not crippled in any way.

For those times when you sail away from civilization in the company of your iPod Shuffle, here's something that'll come in... hand(s)y.

Hand power generator for your shuffle, isn't that great, eh ? If you really don't want to work out any muscle, you could always try a photo voltaic generator (read : solar power)...
