A sound problem on MDD G4s with 10.3.6

On Apple discussion forums, many people report a nois issue on their MDD G4s since they upgraded to 10.3.6. The audio line out seems to deliver a volume that's too high and distorted.
Zapping PRAM seems to bring a temporary improvement, which will soon fade.
