Headphones that make your iPod shine

By Kalomir. Original by Lionel - 18/10/2004 21:17:34 CEST - Category: iPod
The iPod undoubltedly IS an excellent music player. Yet you won't say the same of its headphones, though they may not be that bad, there not the best you'd find, especially in noisy environments.
Apple on their store sell the iPod In-Ear. For 39 Euros, it will replace the original one. Yet if you're ready to try a more expensive one, why not try the Etymotic Er-6i Isolator.

Thoses headphones we tried are way better. Their dynamic is quite superior, you'll even encode some sogs in better quality after using them. Its main advantage is to provide a real isolation from the outside. To give you an idea, wearing those and listening to your songs at a moderate level, you won't hear the bell in the parisian subway.
Be careful though as those advantages may become drawbacks. Do not use in a car ot on a bike, it may be dangerous. The provided sound output will be higher than that of Apple's headphones, you'll have to get used to it.
You'll also have to get used to plugging it deep in your ear conducts, which may feel a bit weired.
Yet if you're ready to invest over 140 Euros, you'll get the best out of your iPod using this.

iPod and CERN 50 years

By Kalomir. Original by Lionel - 18/10/2004 20:45:53 CEST - Category: iPod
We've told you of the limited iPod series made for the CERN [Centre d'études et de recherches nucléaires] 50th birthday.
Martin, who works there, sent us some pics.

The first one shows us the litlle quizz displayed at the entrance to win a specially engraved iPod.
Even if this iPod is a 10 Go 3G "only", it will soon be a real collector, as the CERN is famous all over the world.

The HardMac.com team

By w00kie - 18/10/2004 15:54:43 CEST - Category: MacBidouille
Welcome to the V.2 of HardMac.com, LE MacBidouille in English. As you might have noticed for the last couple of days, we are now in sync with our French version, ready to roll. In light of this event, we thought we'd introduce our team members to you (as the translation team managed to go on from summer 2003), our faithful readers. In no particular order :
Eric (aka Linathael): European, French, molecular biologist in Switzerland while living in France. "I met my first Mac (Apple IIe) when I was 12 years old, then I grew up with computers, and now if I am working in Life Sciences (R&D), I am still using computers everyday (PC, Mac, SGI).
Kalomir : Only just 30, born with personal computers (I had an Apple IIc !) and macuser (with some interruptions, yet never owned a PC in my life !) for twenty years, I first got interested in Macbidouille by reading the [French] forums, when the first rumors about the G5 were discussed. I was recruited eighteen months ago for the launch of Hardmac, and from that time, as a member of macbidouille team, I have been trying to coordinate the work of our translators, all of them being so very good willing while they're dispatched all around the world. As I studied history and am now working in book publishing, I am the "littéraire" of the team.
Moose : Moose loves Macs and fish, hates PCs and dogs.
Xrissley : French, Paris-based. Early 30s, dabbles in web-design, programming, and other useless stuff... Loves the Mac because of its elegance, and thinks that command line does fit into it naturally. Currently on semi-permanent leave from MB because of a stringent NDA.
error404 : Got Mac OS in his feeding-bottle. Studying financial stuff, he would rather ride his mountain bike in the single tracks surrounding the Loire river, or play the sax. Barely able to plug a toaster, he almost destroyed his iBook the only time he tried to open it...
kurisu : a very late 20's guy living in Tokyo, wearing Oakley shades and working with big ships. Not your typical Mac user, he spends most of his time in the Terminal. When he is not working on the phone or in front of his Mac, you can find him listening to Jazz in some shady bar around Ginza.
If you add to those another French (based in Germany), a Tahitian (in Great Britain), and an American in South America, you'll surely acknowledge volunteer work and globalization may get along well on the Web! In the Mac universe, at least ;)

New ''uncrackable'' optical media protection

By kurisu. Original by Lionel - 18/10/2004 06:37:02 CEST - Category: CD Drives - Source: CDR Info
Dynamic Media Solutions has just announced its new data copy-protection scheme.
According to them, this protection, which works on both CD and DVD medias for video and data, is uncrackable : it uses complex algorithms paired with a chemical compound present on the media. The chemical reaction of the laser beam hitting that compound (and therefore the data returned to the reading lens) ensures the data read is original. DMS further adds that this scheme will not render the media unreadable, no matter which drive is used to read it.

Do It Yourself, intermediate level

By kurisu. Original by Lionel - 18/10/2004 05:15:14 CEST - Category: G5
Apple has published a few tutorials on how to replace iMac G5 parts by yourself(20" and 17").
For all replacements, the difficulty level is said to be "intermediate". This word not meaning a lot when it's all by itself, Apple is not taking any risks.
We ran by a few of those PDFs. The instructions are clear and simple. All of them are accessible to anybody not afraid to use a screw driver. Quite frankly, if we had to rate them, we'd say they are very beginner friendly, except perhaps the ones for midplane assembly/disassembly which are a bit short.
