We were already talking about Setup Assistant, a small but powerful application available with recent Macs. It allows you to recover quickly his working environment while changing computers. Karim-Pierre has found a new non-documented function:
I own a copy of Mac OS X v10.3.5 send to me by Apple as part of an ADC account, and I used it last week to reinstall my computer (AluBook 15"). Before doing so, I have created a mirror image of my HD partitions on an external AluICE FireWire 800, thanks to Carbon Copy Cloner, and ensured that I could boot my computer from it. I even worked during 2 days only using my "external" disk partitions to ultimately validate the system.
Then, when I reinstalled my computer this week-end, MacOSX installer asked me if I wanted to import all users’ profiles and settings from another Mac. Then I though, if it works in target mode from another computer, why should it not work simply from an external FireWire HDs if this one contains MacOSX? So I have tried and it works!! Setup Assistant recognized perfectly well my external disk as if it was a another Mac.
That way, I could transfer without any headaches all my users profiles and settings, and everything is working fine.
We take the opportunity of this news to remind you to perform regular backup of your data! There is not one day without a message from one of our readers having lost valuable data due to lack of backups, whereas it should be done by default by all users.
According to
The Inquirer, lack of high-end graphic cards, such as Radeon X800XT and GeForce 6800Ultra, could be the result of the lower than expected stock of GDDR3 memory modules.
This ultra fast memory type is almost exclusively only produced by Samsung. However, one should not get disappointed too fast. Andy, one of our Swiss readers, has received yesterday a message from Apple notifying shipment of his GeForce6800Ultra-equipped PMG5 Dual 2.5GHz. He should have it in his hands by the end of this week.

Here is Michelvdh's testimony regarding Skype, a software to phone over IP.
A short mail to tell you that I made a few tests with Skype between a Mac and a PC, and it works very well. The sound quality is very good and installing the software couldn't be easier.
What is amazing with Skype is that it works from the very first time! It's so easy that even my mither-in-law uses it ;-)
As a reminder, Skype is totally free. It features also services towards standard operators phonelines and mobiles, for both of which you'll be charged for.
