First benchmark of a G5 Dual 2.5 GHz

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 05/07/2004 18:15:53 CEST - Category: G5
Macrumors, has succeed to get access to CineBench results of a G5 Dual 2.5 GHz equipped with a GeForce 6800 Ultra. Hereafter are the published results.

Numbers in brackets are corresponding to those ones obtained by XLR8yourmac with a G5 Dual 2.0GHz. The performance gap between both models seems humongous, but we deeply think that this is due to a small mistake.
There are currently 2 version of CineBench. One of them is a beta version which is optimized for G5 processor, whereas the other one is not. We had already published the results of a comparison between both versions of CineBench with the same computer. Hereafter are the results.

Things are then getting quite clear. Data mentioned in brackets as reference for a G5 Dual 2.0GHz are those ones obtained with the non-G5 optimized version of CineBench. Indeed, if we compare our test with the data for the dual 2.0GHz from macrumors.com, we obtained almost exactly the same results for the processor test (rendering), confirming the 25% performance increase (monitor resolution does not have any effect on processor tests).
it is also possible to notice, without any surprise, that the GeForce 6800 Ultra is really more powerful that the Radeon 9800 Pro, even with a higher resolution.
For Pro consumers, 25% performance increase for massive rendering operation will be worth it; and they will immediately upgrade their working stations.
[translator notes: so in summary, the performance improvement is more in a range of 15 to 20%; which is still important)

Recall program for some GigaDesigns products

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 05/07/2004 17:56:59 CEST - Category: Overclock - Source: XLR8yourMac
Gigadesgins has launched a recall program for its Cube G4-7457 CPU Upgrade Cards. Those cards are available as 1.4 and 1.5GHz CPU.
we do not know the reason for this recall, but it should not affect too many french (neither european) mac users since those cards were only starting to be available.

Many thanks to Pierre-Yves for the piece of information. We wish not to comment this find at all, but merely show you some more diversion of the iPod advertising theme. This picture is from http://www.angelfire.com/vamp/warposter/ , and was taken in Los Angeles.

Thanks to our friend Kalomir for this info/photo.

France 2 was recording Lance Armstrong while he was warming up before the prologue... his iPod could not escape my well trained eyes, and thanks to Alchemy, we will see this image on Macbidouille.
we should remind that Lance Armstrong is a skilled macusers.
He is using an iBook while traveling and his training is managed with FileMaker.
The only missing thing now is an "apple" on his jersey :)

iPod Mini on tracks for Europe?

By linathael. Original by Yoc - 05/07/2004 15:21:38 CEST - Category: Apple
The iPod mini might finally be available in Europe? According to several readers, Fun Radio is preparing to launch a game with an iPod mini to win. except if they have special agreement with Apple US, it seems that stocks of iPod mini are getting built in France.
In addition it is possible to pre-order the iPod mini on the online shopping site "digital shopping", via presence-pc web site.
Steve was promising iPod mini for Europe in July...it seems that's going to be true...

Everything about Tiger, and the rest...

Our dear Swiss Friend Cuk has published a lengthy illustrated test of the Tiger Preview* We invite you to read it before Apple ask for it to be removed... and Cuk even provides zipped or stuffed versions so you can download it and read it offline and save his bandwidth.

*[translator: please STOP calling it Tiger, it's probably 25% complete... btw, the article is in French but the screenshots are still worth looking at]

6800 Ultra and noise

Tom Tom says...

Some remaks:
1 the vid card on the picture on Apple's website is a 6800 GT, not an Ultra. We can thus hope the model that will ship will not have the same characteristics.
2 Like you said, Apple can be so stupid as to ship its silent watercooled G5 with a vacuum-cleaner powered 3D card. You can (hardly) see on the pic that the GerForce 6800 Ultra in the G5 that were shown at the WWDC has a modified cooling system, with a HUGE heatsink (likely in aluminum) under the fan, which probably means the fan can runs at lower speed compared to the GT...
Conclusion: Apple is working on a 6800 Ultra (quiet edition) ;-) and after all there's plenty of time since it won't ship until late august. MAc gamers rejoice, you might still hear that Skaarj warrior coming ;)

According to the picture, that card seems to use two PCI-X slots.
