iTMS will be in Luxembourg

By Kalomir. Original by Lionel - 14/06/2004 20:21:06 CEST - Category: Apple
We had promised not to publish rumors any more, yet the following informations come from long researches made by one of our sources, who is not working for Apple at all !
Apple will be hosted in Luxemburg to benefit from a leak in the European law so the taxes will be 3% only.
There will be localized versions of the iTMS: UK, Fr and Germany. Other European will only have access to a generic, English speaking store.
As for the song price, things still seem a bit unclear. Prices could reportedly vary from 1.05 to 1.19€.
We'll know more about that tomorrow by lunch time anyway.

The G5 Dual 2GHz is still the Best seller

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 14/06/2004 12:14:43 CEST - Category: G5
We succeed in getting the figures of the first orders for G5 in some distribution channels. Though we cannot publish them, we can however tell that the G5 Dual 2GHz seems to be the most appreciated machine.
It was already the case with the first G5 last year, until the dual 1.8GHz entered the range.
As usual, the low range doesn't seem to attract so much. But companies might be more interested than single users by that kind of machine. We don't have any access to those figures.
The sales of the elitist G5 Dual 2.5GHz start slowly, but we can find an explanation to this fact. This is the most "pro" of the professional machines, and such a purchase isn't realized "just like that", it requires a planification.
We'll try to follow those figures in the incoming weeks.

P2P: Devil or scapegoat?

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 14/06/2004 11:30:45 CEST - Category: Internet - Source: http://www.silicon.fr
A poll ordered by "la FNAC" (trans.: one of the main French reseller for computing, photo, video and audio devices, and books, CDs... A bit like a Virgin Megastore.) has once again an interesting outcome. It concludes that out of the 15% decrease in sales of CDs, only 2% or 3% are related to illegal downloads.
The reasons are going to be so painful for the majors that they will probably deny totally those results:
- Aging of the compact disc media
- Ineffective price management
- Decline of the investment
- Competition of other products on the entertainment and culture sectors...
We have often wished that the regarded industry question itself rather than accusing others for its counter-performance.
In the same time, the ADAMI (organization managing the copyrights of authors and composers) propose to legalize the P2P in settling a tax gathered by the ISPs. We already gave our point of view on this(HERE).
The iTMS is supposed to arrive tomorrow, and it would be wise that all the concerned people accept a moratorium of several months, in order to evaluate the effects on illegal P2P of legal offers proposing a wide choice.

HD-DVD gets a green light

By Moose. Original by Lionel - 14/06/2004 06:41:45 CEST - Category: CD Drives - Source: CDR Info

Last week end, the DVD Forum has finalized and approved the HD-DVD 1.0 standard. It's a standard competing with Blue-Ray and using the same blue laser light for storing up to 30GB on a single dual-layer 12" disc.
Its main pro is to ensure compatibility with standard CDs and DVDs. Its main cons are to store less than the Blue ray and to be... late!
