Lite-On wans to be the second biggest DVD burner producer

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 04/05/2004 23:40:43 CEST - Category: CD Drives - Source: Digitimes
Lite-On IT aims to become second largest global DVD burner producer in 2004. Quite a challenge.
Last year, Lite-On was ranked fourth, with almost 1 million DVD burner produced. Before Lite-On, we have Hitachi-LG, Pioneer and NEC.
Two factors should help Lite-On to boost its sell in the DVD burner segment:
- Lite-On is going to produce all SONY branded DVD burner.
- Lite-On is now getting quickly access to the latest technology improvements, improving the quality of its DVD burners.
Consumers should be happy, and we should see more and more the price of DVD burners going below the psychological limit of 100€.

Sonnet and Dual Processor 1.3GHz upgrades

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 04/05/2004 18:16:17 CEST - Category: Overclock - Source: XLR8yourMac
Well after Powerlogix and Gigadesigns, Sonnet has just announced its first dual processor G4 745x based CPU upgrade.
As for the competition, this card set at 2x 1.3 GHz works in all SDRAM AGP G4s (MMD G4s not supported).
If you have one of the first AGP G4 (Sawtooth), you need to make sure that your machine's Uni-N revision is higher than 3. (See here).

This WMA will self-destruct in 5 seconds !

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 04/05/2004 18:05:46 CEST - Category: PC
Windows will add a functionality to WMA audio format that will give it a set lifetime. It will be possible to give the sold song a more or less long lifetime. After the set date, or at the end of a subscription, the file will become unreadable.
It seems that they try to sell more and more of these disposable multimedia? We already had the disposable DVDs, games for rent...
This is another means to boost economic growth on a number of consumers that increases very slowly (China isn't really prone to the Web and to cultural products).

Radeon X800 : first test available on PC [updated]

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 04/05/2004 16:40:04 CEST - Category: Video
It is today that ATI should officially announced its last GPU, Radeon X800, and we should see benchmarks/test everywhere on the web.
By mistake Tom's Hardware had released yesterday its last article featuring a deep analysis of the Radeon X800. It has been quickly removed, but it is now officially available here :
ATI Radeon X800
To make this story short, it seems that ATI is leading again the Graphics Performance War over nVidia GeForce 6800...
ATI a mis en ligne de nombreuses démos technologiques. Il y a en bien entendu au format Quicktime. Attention, elles sont énormes !

Now we only have to hope that Apple will quickly install this new ATI GPU in the next PM revision which should be around the corner. Indeed it would be difficult to imagine a Radeon 9800, even the XT version, for the high-end PM models...

Linux is scaring Microsofft

By linathael. Original by Lionel - 04/05/2004 16:27:54 CEST - Category: PC - Source: PC Inpact
Slowly but surely, Linux is paving its way in the enterprise business. The first company to be disturbed by that : Microsoft.
But how to fight against Linux if you can not buy the company developing it??
So Microsoft has launched a campaign proving that Windows is more powerful that Linux. This analysis is quite an interesting piece of marketing...
It would be nice if Linux could impact Windows the same way that Explorer, freely distributed, "killed" Netscape....(one can always dream...)

the huge IQ of the Quicktime updater designers

By Moose. Original by Lionel - 04/05/2004 07:40:15 CEST - Category: Software
Jeannot gives us an explanation on the HUGE size of the QT 6.5.1 updater:

This update weighs a hefty 33MB, to be compared with the 18MB of the actual QT6.5 installer... what's the reason behind this increase, which made lots of RTC modem users unhappy?
Well, it is sort of funny (if you dont't have an RTC modem on a 56k dial-up): it's simply the large blue Quicktime "Q" logo which is displayed as a background for the installer! It's a 1MB tiff file and it is DUPLICATED for each language in the installer!!! If you remove those "Q"s, the 6.5.1 installer gets a slimfast treatment and goes down to about the same size as the QT6.5
15MB extra download for a nice big blue "Q" (which doesn't even appear if you do the update through OSX's Software update), now that leaves interrogations about the IQ of the people who designed this...

OK, it's true that more and more people have broadband access, but Apple should do some efforts to reduce the size of those fat installers...
