As every year, Apple is present at the IBC expo, Amsterdam (Holland). Teddy tells us a bit more to what he has seen:
Hello, from the IBC 2003 (www.ibc.org) where Apple (http://www.apple.com/fr/hotnews/articles/ibc/) has the biggest exhibition space (150m2), as well as the most beautiful one.
The star is not FCP4, Shake, Luxology, Soundtrack ... but the G5 : there is humongous poster of a G5 at the entrance of the Apple show room.
All the software presentation start with a commercial ad for the G5; all the demo are made on a G5 (excepted demo for mobile video editing system).
To be noted , there is a dual G5 used for a demo performing in real -time mode a special effect under FCP4 :building a mosaic from 9 DV video streams. Then there is a guy shown on the display, turning back and asking "isn't that bluffing??, and you have still see nothing...", and it shows a mosaic of 6 non-compressed video stream (high quality), always in real-time mode, and this using a standard dual G5 (no additional video card).

Jeannot posted an interesting trove on our [French] forums (
ICI).
In a Final Cut Pro 4 file named "FCP RT Software DV Enabler", it seems Apple has determined precisely the real time calculation capacities of all their supported machines. A script determines the costs of all effects according to bus speed and CPU power.
Jeannot realized a graph displaying the results.

This way some things we'd been aware of for long are confirmed:
- A 733 G4 without L3 cache is as powerful as a 500 G4 with L2 cache.
- Switching from SDRAM 133to DDR on MDD G4s only slightly improves performances.
The most interesting thing seems to be the way Apple has ranked their G5s.
A 1.6 GHz G5 has the same CPU cost a Dual 1 GHz G4 has.
A 1,8 GHz G5 has a more important CPU cost than a Dual 1.25 GHz G4 (being therefore less powerful)
The Dual 2 GHz G5 is the only one more powerful than the dual 1.42 GHz G4 (around 30% better).
We're far from Steve Jobs's exalted announcements.
Here are some more shots from the iPod campaign:
From Mathieu, Paris with the Louvre in the background.

From Loïc, Bordeaux with the "Colbert" ship.

From Jean-Pierre, during Techno Parade in Paris this week-end.

Another person managed, with an Amex credit card, to obtain an account on the iTunes Music Store from France. S/He prefers to stay anonymous in order to use this account:
I've tried to order on the iTMS this week following the news explaining the trick.
To have my account registered, I had to try a good dozen times !
Troublesome fields are State and City. In fact even by putting “AE” (armed forced in Europe), the city (Paris) isn't accepted on first try.
I have done many tries with Europe, EUROPE, PARIS, Paris, Lyon, Marseille, and finally and ununderstandably it's “Paris” that finally got accepted for no reason, though I had already tried it.
In conclusion, it really works with an Amex, but you'd better be obstinate !

Thanks to Guillaume and Mac Régis for the info
According to
le Journal du net, Emmanuel Chain will interview Steve Jobs in his show "Merci pour l'info" (="Thanks for the info", he must read Macbidouille and stole my favorite line).
The Canal+ website did not confirm this. But that would be remarkable, considering that Steve accepts very rearely to meet with journalists.
This show runs on Monday at 18h50.
[Upd] We have more news for those who'd like to see Steve for real!
Though it is not officially confirmed yet, he should be at the show tomorrow evening. Here it is:
