New design Lacie

By Xavier Rissley. Original by Lionel - 02/08/2003 13:22:56 CEST - Category: Hard Drive
On the trail of the success of its Data Bank, LaCie has mandated Porsche Design with the re-design of the rest of its product range.

Well, as much as the design of the Data bank stood out, shaped like a gold bar, it is difficult to see much of a personal touch in this box of a shape a bit too much ... rectangular. It is nevertheless lean, but we must not have the right taste because we cannot find it sexy or radically different from what is being done already.

A mean that is worth as well as others

By Xavier Rissley. Original by Lionel - 02/08/2003 13:10:57 CEST - Category: Laptop
Jean-Marc, living in the States for the last 23 years (it is the reason for its rather rusty French [gone through the translation, the rusty English being mine, ant Tarot reading is NOT my forte ! -xrissley]) is wondering like all of us when the new laptops will come. Rather than read soem blurred rumors, he decided to ask the tarot cards.

After formulating a very precise question in my head and on the paper, I drew 12 cards representing the 12 coming weeks, starting with the week from the 7/27 to the 8/2. My interior intention prior to drawing the cards, was to only pay attention to the straight cards (and not inversed) and to those of the major arcane, as they usually correspond to meaningful and positive events.
The card that answered the most positively was "XXI, the World" (one of the most positive card regarding world-wide success) of which one of the symbolic signification is "end of a phase and beginning of a new one"! Most appropriate for a question regarding the end of a generation of powerbook and the beginning of another! Also, this card, the 7th in the draw, corresponds to the 2nd week of September! Which seems to confirm the 2 rumors ont his site, does'nt it?
Thes third card is also a black card of a major arcane ("III, the Empress") but it seems not to fit directly my question. Its message is maybe one of fecundity, creativity or "productive actiob". Could it be that during this week (8/10-8/16) an official annoucement, or a rumor, would appear to confirm the fact that the "baby" is on its way... That Motorola eventually "gave birth" and started production of the new PowerPC... ?

After all, this method is well worth the others :)
PS: This of course all tongue in cheek ! But they must be doing the same thing at Apple, to find out what Motorola is preparing!

info about the Public Beta of Script Editor 2

By Xavier Rissley. Original by Lionel - 02/08/2003 12:46:20 CEST - Category: Software
Thanks to Vric for bringing us this information about the beta of ScriptEditor 2.0:

Important for those CLassic application scriptwriters : As I had the opportunity to mention it on the Emailer-Talk mailing list a few months ago, the 2.0 beta versions of the script editor do save the script in the DATA fork, which wil not work in Classic applications or under Mac OS 9.
The Beta 2 version is a bit less bad than the first one; its scripts are not crashing the Classic apps that try and run them. But it still doesn't work. Previous versions would save exisiting scripts under their original format (that is, a script for OS X is in DATA, but a script written for OS 9 remains in RESORCE and still works after edition).
So those who script Classic apps must beware never to modify these scripts with Script Editor 2.0 beta or 2.0 beta 2, but with the 1.9 verion that came with the system, or better with the French and free script editor Smile (which, by the way, lifted the 32k limitation and integrated a search/replace function ages ago).
If the harm is already done, the only way to get a Classic script edited in Script Editor 2.0 is to save it again with Smile, that can be found here:

Unlock firmware of the superdrive of powerbook [upd.] [upd.] + Caution Note

By Xavier Rissley. Original by Lionel - 02/08/2003 12:37:55 CEST - Category: CD Drives
Thanks to Baptiste for this info.

The first PowerBooks with SuperDrive that came out of APPLE COMPUTER's factories had a revision of their SuperDrive that limited burning speed to 8x for CDs and 1x for DVDs, the D0C4 version. The firmware was later on updated, but Apple did not do an official update. I found on XLR8Yourmacan update to the firmware, D0CB, that now allows me to burn CDs at 16x and DVDs at 2x! I am sending you the said file because I do not think I am the only one to be frustrated by the situation.

Firmware download: fw_UJ-815.sit
Beware !
This update is done at your own risks. Macbdiouille cannot be held responsible of any damage that could occur.
[Upd.] Baptise was a bit too otimistic. After trials, it is still not possible to go above 1x for DVD and 8x for CD :(
At least, with the new firmware, the drive is compatible with Retrospect.
[Upd.] [Upd.] Caution Note ! If you have a powerbook 17", do not apply this update ! It is in fact a lower version of the firmware already installed on these machines, and will prevent you from burning DVD-RW. Which you could do until now. More info in the Mac section of rpc1.com here.
