Burning Blu Ray media on Mac

par Lionel - 03/11/2006
Current solution: get a BD burner and Toast BD 7.1.1
Introduction
The war between Blu Ray and HD-DVD format is far from being over. If you can quite easily find BD burners, standalone BD players are almost not available, whereas HD-DVD players have been in shops for weeks. However, BD media are available, while HD-DVDs are not that well distributed.
One can burn BD media on Windows thanks to a specific version of Nero that was made available a couple of months ago. On Mac OS X, there is no solution so far, as no retail BD-compatible Toast Titanium version was released yet, despite the announcement of an official support for this format last year by Roxio/Sonic. However, this version does exist! It is currently only available for OEM, and delivered as bundle with some burners (depending on manufacturers).
When contacted, Roxio immediately sent us this BD-compatible version, named Toast 7.1.1.
We then looked for a BD burner, and finally selected the LG model, aka GBW-H10N. It burns BD at 4x, and will read and write all CD and DVD formats. In addition, it is one of the "cheapest" ones on the market, still around 700€ yet .
In the next pages, we will describe the installation of this burner in a Mac Pro and its integration with Toast BD 7.1.1.
