First boot with Leopard

par Ewok - 12/08/2006
Following WWDC's annoucements, find in this article an illustrated preview of the new features Leopard brings you.
6. The Rest
Here are some illustrations of other new behaviours and changes which we are excited about.

iChat has a new look (cocoa style). It is now possible to share your screen.

While your ocrrespondant types, threee dashes show up, and the text is posted progressively.
Note: This functionality is only in Bonjour messaging, and was available in Tiger.

Search result criteria can be defined in the search result window of spotlight.

In Preview it is now possible to make annotations on the images:
red circles or zones of text which are saved with the file. The previews in the drawer are resizable.

Leopard offers a much improved new voice, Alex, that sounds more realistic (although only in English).
Fred is, of course, still there.

The Help menu has been redesigned and giving a search interface.
It functions in the same manner as spotlight, but restricted to help files.

When renaming a file, the selection now exclues the file extension.

The file type's default application can now be selected
directly in the contextual menu (previously you needed to Get Info
or hold option while opening the contextual menu).

Some bugs that were found:
• Sound doesn't work any longer when a headphone is plugged in
• Applications crash regularly, and some, like Adium, don't run at all
• The icons for external volumes are placed incorrectly
• The bluetooth icon is not greyed out, even when the interface is disactivated
...
Conclusion
This next version is a good update to Mac OS X: No bad surprises, but no fundamental changes either. Apart from the tiring, but tolerable, bugs, with 8 months until the official release, this beta did not disappoint. The few examples shown in this article illustrate the desire and energy of Apple for providing a complete and packaged computer environment for the user. An attractive way not only thanks to the hardware, which has a limited life, but also thanks to a complete and agreeable OS and software suite. We will be delving in to the deeper parts of this system in the weeks and months to come.
