Test EyeTV 2.0

par Lionel - 12/02/2006
New features - New functions
INTRODUCTION
It seems to me that products from ElGato (their EyeTV in particular) embody the "Mac" spirit, being easy to use and of excellent quality. Unfortunately, the software that comes with the device lacked some functionalities and its interface was in many ways not ergonomical enough, somehow annoying at times. For example, it was awfully hard to open channels one by one in a drop-down menu lost in the depths of preferences, especially when, like I do, you connect to satellite via an EyeTV 310 (more than 480 channels !). So, as soon as I read on Macbidouille/Hardmac that a new version of the software was available, I bought version 2 by ElGato. Bad surprise, if you bought your EyeTV before December 1st, 2005, the upgrade comes at a cost... too bad, I'll buy it anyway! (49 euros)
49 euros are a promotional offer and shall next rise to 79 euros. So, if after reading this article you're convinced just like I am, don't wait too long! (I have no ElGato shares, just some Apple ones...)
TEST
So, I downloaded EyeTV 2.0.
As for installation, no problem, just mount the .dmg file, and replace the older version via a single drag'n'drop in the Applications folder. Preferences are preserved (PHEW!). Upon launching the app, the difference with versions 1.xx is blatant. "Tiger" like interface, inspired by the iApps, with a "read" menu on the left and contents on the other side. The remote sports a new design and is more intuitive. Yet if that would be all for this update, I'd be a tad disappointed... but no!

Let's now see the significant improvement brought by this version.
