VGA Silencer in a G5

par Gui92 - 10/10/2004
Guide to installing a Radeon 9800 noise blocker kit in a G5.

Fed up with the fan noise of my Radeon 9800 Pro (which it is quite appropriate to compare with a dentist tool, the owners of this card surely will know what I mean), I decided to place a VGA Silencer kit from artic-cooling on top of it. This operation, though apparently trivial, gets somehow complicated due to the lack of room in the PCI compartment of a G5. It is the reason why I decided to create this little illustrated how-to.

You'll first take the card out of the Mac, then unclip the ATI radiator. On my card it was quite easily done, yet make sure you won't slip while pushing on the little clips on the back of the card. Should the radiator resist, one hour in your freezer (in a sealed bag !) should make the process of extraction easier. Afterwards, you'll have to take down the stainless steel sheet that houses the VGA, DVI and S-Video ports. Finally, you'll clean — with caution — the GPU core so that you'll get rid of any residual thermal paste or pad, and will spread a new thin layer (the kit includes a paste tube).
Here's the result:

Then, don't forget to lay the stainless steel sheet which is required for putting the huge arctic-cooling radiator to the ground:

Now, put in place the arctic-cooling ports sheet:

Then connect the fan to the card:

And put the radiator on the card (be careful to place the wire of the speed command between the card and the radiator).
Take the whole thing upside down:

And there comes the first issue, it would seem the radiator bracket (the blue plastic piece) will never enter in the G5. A small tweak is requested:

Take down the metal piece from the blue plastic support, and extract with delicacy the central pin. This pin is there to improve contact between the core and the radiator by pressing the card lower surface. You'll then replace the pin on the metal bar:

Then you place the radiator, for the following result:

Then put the whole thing inside the G5, and...this won't do, you'll also have to cut the metal bar.
