Fix an Apple Studio Display

par Lionel - 09/09/2004
Here is an illustrated guide to fix (low cost) an Apple Studio Display.
In the office we had a nice Studio Display 17", but one day, the little dude started to act funky :

With a blinking light... Diagnostic : the power circuit of the backlight is failing. Ok, this ain't the end of the world, but there's a pickle : Apple doesn't have any special "plan" for that sort of things, the only thing they offer is to pay a lumpsum for the whole screen's repair, and it is not light for the wallet. To cut the story short, buying a new display is a lot cheaper :-(
You're going to start crying, and I certainly feel the same way. Hopefully, as the slashdot saying goes "Google is your friend". There is a little company that goes by the name Monitorprofis, located in Mannheim, Germany, which offers to repair said power circuit for the "bargain" price of 147 euros, along with a 6 months warranty... That's better! but to avoid any bad surprises during transportation, you need to take the screen apart, which is in the end rather easy :-)
With our trusty screwdriver we started by removing the three screws that hold the stand.

Then we take off the small shielding

After that we go on to remove the screws placed at the four corners of the screen

to finally take the transparent plastic bezel (be careful, the lower side is a bit tucked)

and the grey bezel underneath... we can now see the metal frame

Down the shielding, you have to remove the two stickers that hold it together, and a screw. Once this stuff is out of the way, you can slide off the shielding

to discover the apparent simplicity of the interior components of the screen. Our problematic power circuit dude is located on the left, you know, the one with the CMS converters on it.

...Three screws and five clips later, you'll be facing this :

Once we got the component card repaired, we went on the re-assembly, as the British say "in reverse order of disassembly". And O joy, our little screen buddy was brought back to life.

Side Note : The company that provides this service seems trustworthy and diligent, however, they only speak German, and a few words of English, which can make the dialog a bit confusing and frustrating... Perhaps reading this article will make them strive to learn about foreign languages :-)
