Disassemble an iBookG4

2004-03-31par Lionel

Instructions on how to take an iBook G4 12' apart (thanks to Antoine Bercovici)

Focus is made on accessing the hard drive, but those steps will help you access most of the other components inside the computer. One piece of good news : the new iBook G4 is a lot easier to disassemble than older models.
Nevertheless, this process is no piece of cake, and you might end up scratching the finish or damage the internals of the computer. So, once again, if you don't feel like you're up to the task, do yourself a favor and bring your laptop to an official Apple repair shop.

Step 1. Removing the bottom shell

Remove the battery (you might need to unlock it first, for that you can use a coin)

Using a flat screwdriver, remove the 3 rubber feet.

Once removed, you'll be able to access the screws. Get them out along with the metallic placeholders for the rubber feet. Carefully note how they are positionned because there is only one way to put them back properly. (Failing to do so will probably reward you with a broken placeholder. They are quite fragile)

Remove the other 3 screws holding the bottom shell with a Torx head.

Next you will need to remove the 2 screws inside the battery compartement with a philips head.

While we are at it, we have to unscrew the ones near the battery connectors as well.
